THE English FA on Thursday announced a three-match ban and a fine of £60,000 on Nigeria’s midfielder, John Obi Mikel following a threatening behaviour towards referee Mark Clattenburg.
Mikel accosted Clattenburg after a temperamental English Premiership tie against Manchester United, accusing the referee of making a racist remark against him.
However, the FA subsequently cleared Clattenburg and charged Mikel for abuse.
Mikel admitted the charge and it was stated that the admission contributed to the leniency the player got from the FA.
An FA statement said: “The Independent Regulatory Commission accepted, as did The FA, that at the time he threatened the referee the player genuinely believed that the referee had racially abused him.
“But for that factor the suspension would have been significantly longer.”
